With the regular season breathing down our necks, both the PSAL and the CHSAA teams are fine tuning their plays and rotations. It is at this time during the year that we get to see teams scrimmage against each other. Sometimes it’s schools that don’t play against each other during the regular season. Such was the case on Friday when the #2 ranked Christ the King Royals scrimmaged against #6 Wings Academy.

Scrimmages are not games in that there are 6 sets as opposed to 4 quarters. Two of the six sets give each team's benches a chance to play against each other. Additionally, the score is reset back to zero after each set, therefore the point advantages of the previous quarter are not carried over. It is for this reason that NYCHoops.net doesn’t look at scrimmages in terms of winners and loser but more so with respect to which players performed well. Here are the top performers of Friday’s scrimmage:

Christ the King

Terrell Hunt - The senior forward who plays both football and basketball has greatly improved his game from last season. Snaring multiple rebounds, Hunt also displayed a solid midrange game. In each of the quarters that Hunt participated in he left his mark on the game.

Isaiah Lewis - The freshman shooting guard showed a more mature game, allowing the game to come to him. Playing within the offensive scheme, Lewis was pure when he had scoring opportunities while remaining active on the defensive end.

Marthely Senat - Other than a foolish technical foul for taunting at the end of the scrimmage, Senat played a good game coming off the bench player. The 6’5” junior displayed good post up moves, finished well at the rim and ran the floor well.

Wings Academy

Amby Fall - The senior forward was defensive beast throughout the scrimmage, contesting shots and grabbing rebounds. Falls had an impact on every quarter he played in. Though he struggled a bit, putting the ball in the basket, Fall’s defensive presence made him a standout player.

Deonte Houston - Houston did a good job orchestrating the team through their sets. The senior point guard also created positive dissonance in the paint when he penetrated, forcing the defense to react which oftentimes created opportunities for him to assist or score.

Overview:

Christ the King was without the services of PG Corey Edwards who says he will not able to play until January due to a disciplinary issue. The Royals were still able to execute their offense with T.J. Curry setting the table. The Royals also got a consistent performance from Omar Calhoun and forward 6'6" Chris Ortiz and 6'5" sophomore Jordan Fuchs. CTK showed that they indeed have depth evidenced by their bench players earning top performance honors

Wings Academy played well but often times had problems finishing around the rim. Wings also got poor offensive production from Gerrell Martin which hindered their progress. To their credit, Wings hustled on defense and contested most of the Royals shots. A few of the set losses were due to last minute lapses on the defensive end in which Calhoun drained buzzer beaters.

Christ the King won 5 of the 6 sets including the two sets between the benches. The largest deficit was only 6 points.
