On Sunday, NYCHoops.net checked out a scrimmage between the #3 ranked Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters and the #8 ranked Benjamin Cardozo Judges. While scrimmages are not games in that they have six sets as opposed to four quarters and that the scoreboard is reset after each set, it does give you an idea of how teams and players perform. Here are the top performers plus overviews:

Lincoln Railsplitters

Kamari Murphy - Murphy played a solid game and worked particularly well on the boards. In each set he played in he was productive offensively with quick moves in the paint.

Jordan Dickerson - Dickerson showed a marked improve in his rebounding, scoring and shot blocking. While the 6’11” senior center stills needs work on his post-up moves, he was frequently able to draw fouls and shot 100% from the free-throw line.

Shaquille Stokes - Stokes showed more efficiency during the sets he participated in, looking to facilitate teammates in addition to being a prolific scoring. The 5’11” senior guard also played well on the defensive end.

Other Notables: Ethan Telfair (5’9” soph), Reuben King, Jr. (6’3” senior), Isaiah Whitehead (6’2” freshman), Shaq Mosley (5’7” junior)

Overview: Coach Dwayne “Tiny” Morton’s Railsplitters ran their sets quite well and looked relatively well organized. They also effectively broke through the Judges full court press on numerous occasions and caused controlled chaos with their defense when their guards rushed to trap the opponents point guard on command. Overall, Lincoln won four of the six sets by an average of 6.5 points.

Cardozo Judges

Chris Gayot - The 5’11” point guard for the Judges had a quiet day plus off day offensively. The senior did however orchestrate the team well.

Jermaine Lawrence - The 6’8” sophomore had moments where he showed glimpses of his potential and other moments where he overextended himself and turned over the ball like the sophomore that he still is.

Terrell Hunt - The 6’5” senior forward had sporatic moments where he was assertive but for the majority of time he was quiet.

Other Notables: Edwin Sandoval, Marcus Cruz and Rasheed Robinson

Overview: The Judges seemed to be somewhat scattered especially on offense and reacted poorly to the Railsplitters pressure defense. Dozo was without services of shooting guard Sheldon Mickell, who head Coach Ron Naclerio says is recovering from illness. As a result, Dozo had few offensive weapons and received the majority of their offense from hustle points as opposed to designed sets. Cardozo was only able to win two of the six sets, by an average of 4.5 points.
