With the regular season breathing down our necks, both the PSAL and the CHSAA teams are fine tuning their plays and rotations. It is at this time during the year that we get to see teams scrimmage against each other. Sometimes it’s schools that don’t play against each other during the regular season. Such was the case on Saturday when the #4 ranked Rice Raiders scrimmaged against #5 Thomas Jefferson Campus.

Scrimmages are not games in that there are 6 sets as opposed to 4 quarters. Two of the six sets give each team's benches a chance to play against each other. Additionally, the score is reset back to zero after each set, therefore the point advantages of the previous quarter are not carried over. It is for this reason that NYCHoops.net doesn’t look at scrimmages in terms of winners and loser but more so with respect to which players performed well. Here are the top performers of Friday’s scrimmage:

Rice Raiders

Richard Council Jr. - Council was probably the most consistent player for Rice. He does what he does which is work the boards and cleans up the garbage. The 6’6” senior forward was reliable for Rice and produced in each set that he participated in on both the offensive and defensive end.

Jermaine Sanders - The Cincinnati bound shooting guard was a bit frigid in the early set but once he warmed up, Sanders drained long balls. Not his best day.

Emmanuel Andujar - Andujar looked primarily to act as a facilitator but on a few occasion’s had miscues. The senior forward did a decent job in transition and on defense as the Raiders tried to initiate their sets.

Melvin Johnson - Johnson showed signs of his potential as he put down some nice midrange shots. In most of the sets that he participated in he made a difference, getting up and down the floor to be a part of what was going on.

Noteworthy:

De'Vaughn Reid (6’0” senior), Naasir Williams (5’10” junior)

Thomas Jefferson Orange Wave

Tyquan Goodlett - The St. Anthony’s (NJ) transfer displayed his ability to penetrate and make things happen on the regular. When the 6’2” was on the floor he became the center of attention as one of the most effective players for the Orange Wave.

Edson Avila - While Avila still has a ways to go on the offensive tip, the 6’9” center did score on some nice put back and was a major shot blocker and deflector for the Jefferson team. The senior ran the floor well and displayed both passion and confidence.

Noteworthy:

Jalen Evans (5’11” junior), Jaquan Lynch (6’0 soph), Brandon Foreman (6’3” senior)

Overview:

Both teams won and loss three sets and both teams seemed unsure of what they were doing and the pace was frenetic. Both teams applied full court pressure a lot on the defensive end and both teams were oftentimes too quick to shoot on the offensive end. In addition, there were quite a few turnovers made by each team. It seemed as if both Rice and Jefferson were still trying to learn and buy into their respective coach’s strategies.

Jefferson has new players who are looking to understand Coach Lawrence “Bud” Pollard system. The Orange Wave was also without the services of Eric Turpin due to disciplinary issues. The Orange Wave also did not get their best game from Davontay Grace who seemed hell bent on jacking up shots, most of which he missed.

With the Rice Raiders, it’s the opposite. You have a new coaching staff with head coach Dwayne Mitchell coupled with players from the old regime. The Rice Raiders did not get their best game from 6’10” center Josh Gomez who seemed frustrated, out of sync and committed frequent turnovers due to poor judgment.

It was therefore befitting that the scrimmage resulted in a tie, an ending that never happens in real life in basketball. At this juncture, both teams would be hard pressed to win against any of the top ten. The good news is that both teams are chock-filled with talented players that should have the kinks outs come the regular season and be raring to go.
