Dwight School Boys Varsity Basketball Team Celebrates “Cinderella Story” Victory and
Heads to New York State Championships Tomorrow as Defending Champions

Student-Athletes Come Back from Three-Time Loss Against Number-one Opponent to Win Semi-finals with NCAA College Recruits and Eighth-grader Playing Side-by-Side

New York, NY, February 28, 2015: The Boys Varsity Basketball Team of Dwight School, a leading international school located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, defeated the number-one team in the league at the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) semi-finals yesterday. Dwight’s team in the number-four slot won 59-48 against Léman Manhattan Preparatory School.

After losing three times to their previously undefeated opponent, Dwight’s team led with several stand-out performances by two seniors. Jeremy Bonifacio, an NCAA Division I College Basketball Team recruit, scored 19 points; and Rodrigue Marthone, Jr., an NCAA Division III College Basketball Team recruit, scored 23 points. Playing beside these seniors on the starting line-up is eighth-grader, Dajuan Piper, who is ranked among the top 50 boy basketball players in eighth grade in the United States.

Coach Dave Brown, a Dwight alumnus, who led the team to victory in the NYSAIS championships last year, reported, “The team triumphed over their undefeated juggernaut opponent because the players believed in one another and performed beautifully. It was a special game and they played with more heart than I have ever seen in my 16 years of high school and college coaching.”

Dwight School, which is dedicated to igniting the spark of genius in every child, has a long tradition of athletic excellence and a roster of alumni scholar-athletes that includes a number of Olympians. Dwight’s Chancellor Stephen Spahn, a former Dartmouth All-American basketball player and the longest-serving head of school in New York City, said, “We couldn’t be more proud of our Boys Varsity Basketball team for demonstrating perseverance and grit in this ‘Cinderella story.’ Despite previous losses to Léman this year, players brought strength, skills, and passion to the game, illustrating that it’s important to never stop trying to do one’s best on the court — in the classroom, and in life.”

Dwight School enters the NYSAIS championships tomorrow as defending champions. The game will be played against Collegiate, at 3 pm, at Fieldston School in the Bronx.
