Boys & Girls Win Beacon Chip

It all comes down to this. Saturday afternoon. The Boy- & Girls Kangaroos versus the Cardozo Judges (B) in The Beacon M.S. Back-to-School Tournament Championship. Led by Mike Taylor the Roos would defeat both A & B team to take the chip 70-57

With one of Cardozo's twin towers, Ryan Rhoomes, MIA due to a knee injury, the Roos immediately attacked their back court and gained a 8 point advantage early in the half. The Judges tried to compete but Mike Taylor (23 points) would knock down a 3-ball which would spark a 9-0 run and like that, the Kangaroos were up 15 with 13 minutes left in the half.

With B&G dominating the defensive boards, Cardozo would only get one shot at their basket. One attempt would be all they needed as a Dwayne Brunson (13 points) basket in the paint cut the lead to 10 points with 8:00 minutes before halftime. The Judges also picked it up defensively in the paint as Tyrel Hunt (4 points) had key blocks on Leroy Isler and Nehemiah Kornegay (2 points) pulled down defensive rebounds.

Unlike Friday's game, Taylor was getting his shot opportunities and nailed them. Cardozo kept the pressure on was able to knock lead down to 3 points as Shelton Mikell (15 points) nailed a 3-ball with 9.8 seconds left. A lone foulshot Jerry White (9 points) gave Boys & Girls a 30-26.

The Roos started the half trapping the point guard and Isler would quickly score on the tunrnover. Brunson would answer with a short hook in the paint and there was no net gain or loss by either team.

That is until Taylor banged two threes kick off an 8-0 B&G run. Down by 12 with 14:53 remaining, Brunson would be the only offense had by Cardozo. Turnovers would negate any positive strides by the Judges and Isler (19 points) would soon begin to counter for the Roos.

With 11:10 remaining, a White runner would extend Boys & Girls lead to 14 points. Malcolm Brooks (13 points) kept hope alive for Cardozo, scoring points in transition but the Kangaroos machine was burning on all cylinders. The deficiet reached 15 points before Cardozo showed any signs of life but Brunson losing his cool and being benched briefly by Coach Mike Blissett didn't help matters.

With 6 minutes left in the game the Roos still had a 14 point cushion while Cardozo was discombobulated. With the lead swelling, the Judges were hard pressed for points. Boys & Girls began to spread the floor while Cardozo attempted to trap but with 3:17 left and still down by 14, the needed mistakes from their opponents. Breaking the Cardozo press, another Taylor 3-ball and a bucket by Leroy Fludd (4 points) gave the Brooklyn squad their largest lead at 18. Up 15 with 53.8 seconds on the clock, the Kangaroos would walk it out to the chip.
