St. Rays vs Wings Recap

After losing their first two games, the St. Raymond won their first game against Stepinac. Hoping to not only continue winning but make a statement, the young Ravens team went up against #8 ranked Wings Academy Wings on Saturday during the B.A.B Challenge at Baruch College. 71-59

In the battle of the Bronx schools, Catholic vs Public, Deonte Houston, a 6 foot junior guard, would put Wings on the scoreboard first with a putback. Gabriel Burroughs would respond with 3-pointer which sparked a 14-2 Ravens run. Krystian Foriest, 6-foot-5 forward would give Wings a shot in the arm, scoring from the perimeter but the Ravens continuously applied pressure and ended the quarter with a 20-13 advantage.

Wings began to recover and pulled to within 2 with 5:40 left in the second quarter as Houston and Aaron Jordan scored in transition. With 4:06 left Amby Fall tied the game at 22, scoring after an offensive rebound.

Senior guard, Jatton Pierce-Bias, would take back the Ravens lead pentrating and banging a 3-pointer. Wings was now down 30-23 with 2:30 left in the half. Nice post up moves by 6-foot-6 soph, Daniel Dingle, along with good Ravens defense helped them secure a 35-28 haftime lead.

St. Ray's looked to extend their lead as Devon Brooks began to drive and kick resulting in assists. Wings was soon down by 10 points with 3:08 left in the third as St. Ray's sped the pace up. A bucket by Pierce-Bias off a feed from Nkeruwem "Kerwin" Okoro and another by Burroughs gave the Ravens a 51-40 lead as the final quarter began.

Wings needed to utilize their senior experience but the sophomore heavy Ravens were holding there own early in the quarter. Down 12 with 7:10 left in the game, Okoro, a 6-foot-4 soph, would increase the Ravens lead off a give n' go from Dingle. Running a motion offense, the Ravens lead grew to 55-40 with 5:59 remaining.

The Ravens height advantage would be too much for Wings Academy. While Wings would make some inroads off of pressure defense and shrink and 18 point lead to 12 points with 2:38 remaining. Houston attacked the Ravens frontcourt and with 1:54 on the clock and Ian vasquez 3-pointer pulled Wings to within 9 points of the lead. St. Rays spread the floor and looked to burn time off the clock but Wings fouled and forced them to convert. Another Vasquez three and the score was 66-59 with 55 seconds but Okoro scored in transition to give Ravens an 8 point cushion. A third three point attempt by Vasquez would be off the mark and the Ravens would go on to win.
